Hiya! My name's Matt, and I've been a Bukkit member for about a year or so. If you're new to the Bukkit community, I give you a warm welcome. If you're an old member, this may revolutionize the way you view and read the Bukkit forums, on your Android mobile devices, if this project falls through.

    Table of Contents
    • Introduction and Overview of the Project
      • Details and FAQ
      • How can I contribute for this project to fall through?
    • The Team (if this project falls through)
    • Other Applications in Mind that Involve Bukkit (if this project falls through)
Introduction and Overview of the Project
The following is an idea proposed to the Bukkit community, looking for their opinions if this project should fall through. If all goes well, I will start recruiting a small development team to develop the application, for Android devices.
    Details and FAQ:
    • What's this project for?
      • This project's purpose is to provide the Bukkit community to view and read threads easier on their mobile devices, fit for their mobile devices.
    • Will this application cost?
      • Not even a penny. However, there may be a "Premium" feature, however, which will cost.
    • If this project falls through, what will the application be called?
      • "Lava Bukkit", however, this may change.
    • What about iOS devices?
      • I didn't forget you guys! For now, if the project falls through, I will further research and create an application for your iOS devices.
How can I contribute for this project to fall through?
Simply vote on the poll above. If I receive enough feedback for the project to be set, then I will start recruiting for a small group to develop the Android application.
Now, I need your opinions and feedback! Vote on the poll and even give a little note to us by replying, I'll read every reply!:)

I'm a bit confused... "If this project falls through" means 'if the project fails', but you seem to be using that phrase for 'if the project succeeds'. (see here)

Anyways, that sounds cool. The mobile theme for XenForo isn't the greatest...
Maybe you could research into XenForo styles and create one? That would work for all XenForo forums on all systems. I have an Android device and an iDevice, so I'm just thinking what would be the most beneficial to the most number of people.

    Guess you could do this...

Although new phones are very powerful, such as 720p - 1080p res, 4.5-5 inch screens and powerful CPUs. So that means we can easily browse this website and many others without a mobile version.

With that being said, I don't see the use of mobile versions anymore. I might be the only one thinking this way though.....

I thought we supported Tapatalk for this purpose? Thought I saw c0mp on it a little while ago, if his "last seen" is to be believed.

I'm sorry my misinterpretation on the phrase "falls through", I took the phrase as "if the project succeeds", my bad.

About creating the style, there's only one problem: all of the template modifications done on Bukkit's current style, which is Flexile, won't be transferred over to the mobile style. However, whoever configured the forums might have used an add-on that doesn't edit the "core" files, but instead almost makes a copy to then edit the files, making template modifications to fit your needs. Which brings up a question from me, do you know who configured the Bukkit forums?

Yes, but XenForo in general isn't the greatest when you're on your mobile device, and not very easy to browse, in my opinion. So, this is why I've brought up the idea.

Tapatalk, first thing first, a really great and well-developed application, for both the Google Play Store and the App Store, but the price is quite expensive for an app like Tapatalk. On the Google Play Store, as of January 6, 2012, it is $2.99. However, this project brings up a similar idea like Tapatalk, but this time, only for Bukkit, and it's free.

Yeah, I looked into it and I was slightly annoyed since the XenForo addon is free. Mind me asking what you use?

lukegb is probably the best person to ask. They do already have a mobile style but it could be improved.

OP: Perhaps add DBO support and throw it all on GitHub?

    UPDATE:

Ahhh, I believe this thread and project can come to a close. As lol768 mentioned, there is an add-on on XenForo that detects mobile browsers and optimizes it. But still, template modifications wouldn't be installed, but I'll discuss it over with who's in control with the forums. Anyone know who? Possibly EvilSeph?

The only XenForo mobile style has gone inactive, and it's not the greatest. You can no longer download it. Many people who use XenForo (not just Bukkit) probably need a mobile style.

You can create a style, and it could be added to the forums -- no modifications needed. I think lukegb is in charge of the forums, and he's already been tagged.

If you make a mobile theme and would like it applied, send a PM to TnT, EvilSeph, lukegb, and myself about it, providing links, examples, etc.

You'll have to have it done before you get to that stage though, and there is no guarantee it'll happen then.

I currently have a Nokia N900, a linux phone that's a bit... rare in the field.

I know that there's a style for XenForo for mobile, but I was speaking of an add-on that detects if the user is on a mobile browser, which optimizes it, rather than having a style.

No. An open source solution with DBO access would work very well - something tapatalk cannot do.

Maybe DBO would be nice, but I don't see the point in dedicating time toward something for XenForo only when there is already a viable solution (tapatalk). It's a waste of time IMHO.

Competition is never a waste of time. It raises standards and causes a reduction in negative thinking patterns.

I know that the phone development website, xda-developers.com, has their own version of Tapatalk. It's specifically built for the XDA website (I don't know the specifics internally, I just know they have their own Tapatalk app on the market).

I don't know if that's something they had to go through Tapatalk for, or if Tapatalk did that for them because they're such a large community, or what. But that might be worth checking into. If it were customized, we could very well get DBO access built on an already established mobile forum platform.

Another option is to just use the API tapatalk provides to make your own version of tapatalk's plugin.

It would be severe trolling on our part.

That could very well be how XDA did it. Like I said, I don't know the specifics. :p

ERm. I've asked about mobile stypes and such before and was told by luke that he was not going to make it automatic. Just click 'bukkit' on the lower left and change to mobile. D:

I'm pretty sure this is what XDA did:
    http://www.tapatalk.com/build.php

However, we could actually make our own app from scratch that is essentially a tapatalk clone (our way) that works with any tapatalk forum and is released for free, because it uses their forum plugins. It wouldn't be that hard, because their API is documented here:
    http://www.tapatalk.com/api.php

    App Development
Tapatalk API also allows you to develop your own app that works with any Tapatalk-activated forum system. This is especially useful if you are running a large community and would like to develop your own app. It allows you:
    • To develop mobile app similar to what Tapatalk team has developed

We could essentially create a free app functionally similar to the tapatalk app using their own API, as far as I understand. It's a pretty simple REST API.

Sounds great. Anyone willing to github this? Who's able to test, also? IRC channel could work too..

Apologies to the mod who had to clean up my mess. I'm having issues with my internet and posts/edits don't look like they're going through - I get timeout errors.

I'm willing to. A fair warning to everyone: The Android SDK sucks compared to Windows Phone and iOS SDKs. Intellij IDEA has slightly better tools than what Google gives you.

I've got #bukkitapp on esper since #lavabukkit was taken. I've always wanted to try some android stuff. Thanks for the heads up.
Since you need an account to access the api documentation - username is bukkitapp and password is bukkitapp

    The tapatalk api docs state:
You can do anything you want with the Tapatalk API, if you have built your own library - you can of course selling it the way you want it. The same fashion like you built a RSS feed reader you can sell it to anyone else.

Working on this right now :)

    UPDATE:

Okay. I've tested Tapatalk with a test XenForo forums of mine, works perfectly. But keep this in mind: it still requires the application Tapatalk. If I'm correct, to have what XDA-Developers have, you'd have to buy a license from Tapatalk, which I'm pretty sure the Bukkit Staff don't want to do. The most we can do at the moment is to simply have an add-on installed to the XenForo forums, users download Tapatalk, search for the Bukkit forums, wa-bam.

    UPDATE 2:

It appears that the Bukkit forums already has the add-on installed, enabling Tapatalk for Bukkit. To actually have an application like XDA-Developers, using the Tapatalk API, we would have to acquire their licenses.

Feel free to write a custom app for Bukkit's Tapatalk installation - I installed Tapatalk for the Bukkit forums a while ago but have no idea if it even still works properly - the version of the plugin installed is 1.1.2 (whilst the newest I am aware of is 1.4.0).

Directory name is the standard "mobiquo".
