Update (Oct 27 @ 10:24 PM EST): We've just pushed out our first CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.4.2 development build, see this post for more information.

    --------------------------

With the Minecraft 1.4 release date fast approaching, a lot of people are wondering when we will be releasing a CraftBukkit Recommended Build for Minecraft 1.4. We hope this short announcement will answer those questions.

Due to the rapid release of preview builds for the impending 1.4 update, we are unable to guarantee that we'll have a compatible CraftBukkit Recommended Build out in time for the release of Minecraft 1.4.2. Although we started working on the update immediately after the Minecraft 1.4 preview was made available to the public, each new preview build leads to delays in our update process as we, essentially, need to start over with each one.

In the past releasing a Recommended Build has caused apparent confusion within the community, as a result for this release, and moving forward, we will follow the "Dev -> Beta -> Recommended Build" release methodology. We are going to release a Beta build as soon as we can get a stable build devoid of any significant bugs.

As we have done a significant amount of important work on CraftBukkit 1.3.2 builds, we have promoted a new Recommended Build recently. This was done so that people have a reliable, stable build to use until we can get a 1.4 compatible build out and so that everyone who relies on Recommended Builds are able to take advantage of all the fixes, improvements and so on we've done since the last 1.3.2 RB.

Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support; we greatly appreciate it!

I assume 'bleeding' is the work being done on 1.4? I guess for those who are really impatient about getting 1.4, they could always just download the source and compile a 'dev build' themselves, eh?

No. Bleeding is where some developers push some projects they work on for future features in bukkit. It is most recently updated because folks have been pushing stuff there while the core team works on updating craftbukkit itself. The code in the bleeding repos is still 1.3.2

Bleeding is experimental code changes. The work on 1.4 is often done locally and not uploaded to GitHub since it often doesn't even compile. Once it does and doesn't cause obvious problems (aka, world corruption, underwater fires, etc), you start seeing builds on dl.bukkit.org.

Also, hi mughi, long time no see. You are correct, that's still the process.

Why the heck do they obfuscate the code? Is there any logical or valid reason, other than to make it harder on modders and developers?

usually it's done to help protect the programmer's intellectual property /etc.. java is quite easy to decompile, so a lot of developers do this to prevent modifications/design theft. For most software, you don't WANT modders/developers..

in this case, the modifications should be desired (bukkit type mods), but if they didn't do this, it wouldn't take much for someone to go in, find the logic that checks for a valid login and remove it.. or add various unpleasantries, and pretty much anything else they wanted.

the api would allow bukkit to interact with the main code without having to touch that code itself. currently, bukkit has to write their own api into the code.

obviously, i'm guessing at all of this, although apparently i am correct about the fact that it is still be obfuscated. if this contradicts anything said by actual staff, believe them over me :)

Code obfuscation is actually pretty common in commercial products, we should be thankful the JARS contain source code at ALL as this isn't really necessary once compiled into p-code

They don't contain source though D:

It seems to have become multiple debates over reason for obfuscation, why Mojang can't be a bit nicer and help them out, and countless requests for the non existent ETA.

Actually, I had a serious question.. Does anyone know if there will be a major or minor change in plugin compatibility? Or none at all.. Just wondering so i know how many changes I will have to make on my server. Seeing as I have 30+ plugins. (Some of which are hand written)

There most likely won't be too many API changes, but we need to wait and see.
