Bukkit is a minecraft server where you can ass plugins to add commands to your server like you can have a invisible barrier in your world and you can see who greifing your server etc.
    Hopes this helps!

what do you mean by nature overhaul?

there are several things that require client mods:
    new items and blocks
    new entitys
changing some of the client physics/features (brightness, jump height, forcing texture pack, etc)
    and more.

what do you want to change exactly?

No, that is still not server only. They require a custom client.

true TnT but its the only simple system out there i can think of to add custom blocks and tools with out knowing java

and installing the custom client is very simple

Not true. This is done via a client and a server mod/plugin. Tekkit does that exact thing, and they do not use Spout.

TnT but with tekkit doesn't that require client modification?

or tekkit can be ran off of a unaltered minecraft client?

Yes, Tekkit requires client modifications. So does spout (aka, spoutcraft).

The only reason Tekkit is easy is it does its own client modifications so you don't have to. The multiplayer still uses Bukkit and still needs client mods but the client\server takes care of it. If you tried to connect to a Tekkit server with a vanilla client and were actually able to connect it'd probably crash the client as soon as it started to load data from the server.

Spout is the same deal server\client handle the modifications.

At the end of the day if the server says "at 36x, 67y, 123z there is block ID 1029 and your client has no idea what that is bad things happen real fast. At some point someone or some program has to tell the client whats going on.

    @OP

Providing you aren't using a mod that changes basic physics or adding blocks, items or mobs to the game Bukkit requires no client side modifications whatsoever.
