A new CraftBukkit Beta Build (1.2.5-R1.3) that provides Minecraft 1.2.5 compatibility and fixes issues in CraftBukkit 1.2.5-R1.2 is now available. Please only use this build if you'd like to help us get a new Recommended Build out and don't mind running a preview build to help us test things. If you were running the previous Beta build, please update to this one as it includes some important fixes.

Will plugins break with this build?
Provided the developers of the plugins you are using are keeping up with the development of Bukkit, all your plugins should work fine.

    What is a Beta Build?
A Beta Build is in between a developer build and a Recommended Build. These builds simply work and are promoted much more frequently than a Recommended Build. While we will do some testing before promoting a beta build, we will not be running it through our extensive test process. As such, there are no guarantees that they will not contain minor bugs. If we do find out they are broken, we will mark it as such on DLB and promote a new one. A beta build may contain incomplete API and new features but they should not interfere with running the build in any way.

For more detailed information on what is contained in this update, please see the changelog here.

Nice! Still using 1.2.5-R1.0, Just wondering though, does this fix high CPU usage? I normally run 2 servers from my computer, but with 1.2.5 I can't as it almost crashes my computer. Any news on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the great work you guys!

P.S. Have you guys started development for Minecraft 1.3?

Everyone seems to be complaining about CPU usage. So thats why my brand new custom built computer with 3.2Ghz and 3 cores didnt seem to have much or any CPU improvements after upgrading from a 10 year old computer (I think) with 1Ghz(maybe 1.5Ghz) single-cored CPU right when 1.2.5 came out...

When I use /reload server broadcasts result in errors. such as /say /bcast timedmessages messages and dynmap webchat but player chat still works fine

It would also cause restarts to not happen with simplerestart but I got the remote toolkit wrapper so that no longer happens

(Im still running 1.2.5 RB 1

if i update will it still be compatible with older plugin versions? if not then these beta uploads are really pointless. If plugin developers are forced to re-code some of there software on such short notice then no one will ever use the beta builds. as of right now im stuck in 1.0 while i wait for the plugins to catch up :(

API hasn't had a major change in quite some time, if it worked with 1.2.5 RB1 it should still continue to work.

We have fixed the major source of CPU usage that CraftBukkit was adding and are working to remove any other places where we add a significant amount of overhead vs a vanilla server. Combined with some other performance work that has been done this beta should be a solid improvement over the last RB in regards to CPU usage.

That being said, Minecraft itself does require quite a lot of resources to run and there isn't a lot we can do in CraftBukkit to improve on that. We've still researching ways to improve performance further but at this point I think any major gains are going to have to come from future Minecraft updates, not from the CraftBukkit project. Also some things plugins do simply require a lot of work so sometimes your performance issues are only going to be fixed by changing what plugins and plugin configuration you use.

Miles_ Your issue sounds like an issue I've seen with the PermissionsEx plugin. Look at the error you get when you try a broadcast and you should see what plugin is giving errors so you know where to report the issue.

Wait, so are you saying that the high CPU usage from the craftbukkit.jar itself is fixed?

That's the purpose of this beta that was just released, to help get the next RB out without many noticeable bugs. Just wait until the next RB if you don't want to help try the beta.

It will help some people. Just test this beta build to see if it helps your server. If it doesn't come back here and let us all know. Test it before you ask, because it may answer your question.

He's saying some of it is fixed and they're still trying to clean up the rest. This beta build is an improvement, in terms of CPU usage, so if you want to help test it try it out and come back here and let us know if you saw any improvement. Thanks.

    Keybounce

I'd like some help in downloading.
    Code:
    keybounceMBP:CServ michael$ curl -O http://dl.bukkit.org/downloads/craftbukkit/get/01063_1.2.5-R1.3/craftbukkit-beta.jar
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
    0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 0
    keybounceMBP:CServ michael$

Curl could not fetch it. But that same URL passed to chrome worked just fine. What did I do wrong?

EDIT: GAAARR. I pasted formatted, space-aligned text that I copied out of a terminal window. After a few seconds, this posting window reformatted it as plain "do not preserve white space" html. Gaaarr. Columns are no longer aligned, but the basic idea is still there. Curl failed; web browser worked, same address.

I'm saying that at this point any increase in CPU usage over vanilla minecraft is likely going to be a matter of a couple percent assuming you aren't using any plugins but we're trying to reduce that as much as possible. At the same time we have some optimizations that vanilla minecraft doesn't so depending on your server setup its possible we're actually faster even with the extra overhead we know about and are trying to reduce.

Try the -L option with curl. That will tell it to follow the 302.

So, i found new release much more efficient, however, my computer is still to weak to handle world and nether at the same time.
I don`t remember how it was before, but i think, that in last recommended version i was able to open gates in fences with LMB [ofc, now i can`t].
Thanks anyway, and keep up the good work!

I know. :'( I was just trying to translate it into Earthing. :p Thanks for extra details, though! [diamond] I didn't know there were optimizations that would allow it to potentially be faster than vanilla. Very nice to know.

Try wget, that's what I do, it's easier to use (less typing than curl) and automatically follows redirects.

One trick I use is a plugin called BorderGuard. I set the square region, say 8000 x 8000 blocks, or less if your server can't handle that. When players hit the edge it tells them they can't go any farther. This is very handy for keeping the lag low and resources within reasonable limits. And, then you can have your nether world still, and maybe even the-end. Just make sure to also set a borderguard limit in your other worlds as well.

I just updated my SkyBlock server. 2 cores 4 gb ram, I am seeing no better performance with 15 people on. Lag everytime somebody logs in

    Can you list your plugins?

Actually, I'd recommend that anyone posting here list their plugins if they are experiencing trouble. Because, it may not be bukkit causing the trouble, it might be a common plugin that everyone has that is causing the issue. And, knowing what you have running might help. Keep the list of plugins horizontal instead of vertical if you can, e.g. a comma separated list like; plugin a v1.4, plugin b v1.6, plugin c v1.0, plugin d v1.2. That will save viewing space in the forum.

Knowing the versions of each plugin could be useful for us as well since it may be that you have an out of date plugin that has fixed its own performance issues in an updated version, for example.

Thanks! I will check that as soon as possible. Now I remember a little adventure discovering unknown lands. This could have been a mistake :p

I don't know if BorderGuard can do this, but if not WorldBorder can cut off the areas outside the border. (Meaning those will be erased completely from disk.)
I did'nt know a large map itself can slow down the server. Since my box is overpowered for that few players on it I have no chance to experience such problems. :p ^^'
Arent only the spawn region chunks (if activated) and the chunks around the players loaded anyway?
