Mojang have just released an update to Minecraft, bringing us to 1.2.4.

This update is primarily a bug fix release but does include some nice improvements as well:
    Fixed:
    • Made placing half blocks on existing half blocks (to make a full block) easier
    • Limit framerate on menu screens, no longer uses 100% cpu and make my computer melt
    • Fixed fatal crash for converted worlds to anvil, when there’s blocks at max height
    • Fixed an old bug with signs clearing text while you’re editing them in SMP
    • Fixed crash when logging in while there are blocks at maxheight at spawn
    • Fixed TNT ghosts in multiplayer
    • Fixed storage minecarts dropping enchanted items
    • Fixed crashes on invalid server addresses when joining a server
    • Fixed entities being uninteractable if they existed at login (Multiplayer)
    • Fixed dupe exploit with paintings
    • Fixed furnaces and dispensers dropping enchanted items
    • Fixed the “flickering” of chat as it vanishes off the screen
    • Fixed text rendering over items in the container screens
    • Fixed exploit with jungle saplings (turns other saplings into jungle ones)
    • Fixed launcher opening minecraft dir if the path contains a space
    • Fixed an off-by-one lighting bug
    • Fixed block transmuting (turning one block into another via pistons)
    • Fixed placing mushrooms in daylight, where they can’t survive
    • Fixed redstone lamps dropping powered block items when destroyed while on
    • “save-all” (server) now works even when you have toggled “save-off”
    • Fixed turning half-blocks into full-blocks while you’re standing on them
    • Fixed seed displaying in F3 debug when the seed is unknown (multiplayer)
    • Fixed villager texture changing clientside per profession
    • Fixed falling off ledge corners while holding shift
    • Fixed players falling when reconnecting to servers where they were previously flying
    Added:
    • Chat history and much better chat editing
    • A few new decoration blocks
    • “Back” and “Quit” buttons to OutOfMemoryScreen
    • Made cats more realistic (read: probably annoying). I hope it’s enough to cancel out any joy you may receive from the previous feature!
    • Added a “minimal” debug menu for testing with. Shift+F3 to hide the graphs.
This is just a short announcement to let you know that we are aware of this and are working on it as I type this. Please note: Minecraft 1.2.4 has bumped the protocol version, so it is incompatible with 1.2.3.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

EvilSeph told me this on the IRC:
"We've had the source code [of Minecraft and the Vanilla Server] for a while, it doesn't help us update."

No, their development release schedule is fine. You're looking for Recommended Builds - those have all the changes between dev builds rolled up into one and come out much less frequently than dev builds.

Also, not a single one of my plugins between 1.2.3 and 1.2.4 broke. Not one.

Even though James is a whiny turd, and thinks too highly of himself, I wonder if anyone's considered something: Bukkit now works for Mojang... who we gave money to. So, Bukkit gets our money, maybe? The above post is a bunch of self-pitying drivel, but there is a bit of expectation that is justified, I think.

Get your facts right: Jeb_ does the updating now, not Notch. Notch doesn't do ANYTHING with Minecraft anymore. :p

No, Bukkit doesn't get your money, Mojang does. Bukkit is still a separate entity from Mojang.

Thanks Bukkit Team, our server (and all plugins) worked within the first few 1.2.4 compatible dev build releases. Great job

None of my plugins broke and I am running perfectly fine on 1.2.4 dev. build 2109. Make sure you run 2109 or higher, or you'll have problems ;)

Are you trying to lead us to believe Mojang doesn't give money to this 'separate entity' aka the Bukkit team that joined up with Mojang. Was this statement made to mislead or bukkit site just not on direct payroll?

If I could collect all the tears of people like you I could make an ocean biome. Bazinga!

Its a small update probably wont break most plugins.

Ever consider that now more than ever the team is busier? Updating minecraft, AND bukkit now. Its hopeless, i know, but grow up. Yes it takes a while, but its free! So be happy its even there.

Anyone else having problems with only 15 people being able to connect without getting the "Internal exception: java.io.IOException: Received string length longer than maximum allowed (120 > 119)"? Only happens on the clients when we have 15 people...

are you on build 2109? This fixed it for me. Still, the user list could cause this error, too :/

As it has been said before, the people who do Bukkit are now employed by Mojang. Bukkit is still a hobby for them until they (hopefully) make it obsolete. When that happens THEN we MAY have the right to whinge. However I would Hope that they've all learned from the mistakes they've learned from Bukkit and construct an API that doesn't break plugins every time there's changes to the game like new biomes, mobs and blocks. One would assume that new biomes, mobs, blocks and items are going to be added from now till minecraft joins the archives of long forgotten games. I will allow that plugins might break if there's drastic changes like new file formats (I kinda hope Anvil is the last, but will assume a few more in the future).

I would also assume that Bukkit knows what a server requires, and all the current bugs to the server code cause them pain too. On this I'm quite happy with the 1.2.4 release which was mostly brought on by their work. I am now looking forward to 1.3 much more than I looked forward to 1.2 that has a modding API + Mobs that don't clitch through walls.

When will people realize that your plugins wont break, if you can't understand this then how are you hosting the server?
